In 2016, I was fortunate to attend a session with Kath hosted by the British International School in Houston. It's no surprise that I learned even more strategies that have helped me to further develop into an inquiry educator. I believe I wore the biggest grin for about week after this professional development. |
Through Sudha's guidance, I was able to see on my own that inquiry without conceptual thinking is just another craftivity. It may be hands-on, but where is the minds-on component? This kindled a passion to learn more about conceptual thinking and how to build it within my planning and teaching. This is when I discovered the work of Dr. H. Lynn Erickson. Take a peek at the website I created as a result of the conceptually driven ideas I learned from Sudha. In Unit 4, you will see how my learners made the conceptual connection of interdependence to the topics of habitats, ecosystems, and biomes. |
Due to Sudha's encouragement, I was accepted for the 2015 Lynn Erickson Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction institute. This was the final session led by Lynn Erickson and Lois Lanning with content specialists including Julie Stern and Tanya Elmer. This intensive 10-day program examined every aspect of concept-based learning and allowed me to analyze my existing practices from a new lens. By the end, I became an independent consultant with the Lynn Erikson Institute. |

The library is the hub of all learning within a school. How it is designed is just as important as the books within the collection. My passion project is working with schools to envision how they want their library space to look and making it come true. In PYP schools, I redesign the entire collection by the six transdisciplinary themes to make research and learning more connected for learners and teachers.
By sorting the collection through the transdisciplinary themes, learners are able to find books that spark their curiosity and inquiries. Coming soon...how can we sort the collection to reflect the MYP global contexts? Hmm....I wonder. |
"Lu was fantastic! We are an international school in Bangkok and we were looking for someone to facilitate a discussion on inquiry-based instruction. Lu met via video conference from Texas and led a great interactive workshop with our staff who were in Thailand. She met administration ahead of time and tailored the training to fit our needs. We would recommend Lu for any professional development you may need! 10/10!" Andrew Shutsa Former Vice Principal British Columbia International School Bangkok |
